Meet authors John Campbell and Cristian Molaro.

About the book:

Under the current economic climate, businesses are under significant pressure to control costs and increase efficiency in order to improve their bottom line. DB2 for z/OS customers around the world are still trying to gain competitive advantage by doing more with less: more business insight, more performance, more operational efficiency, more functionality, more productivity with less cost, quicker time to market and a lower TCO.

With the support for DB2 Version 8 scheduled to end in April 2012 there has never been a better time to start planning your DB2 10 upgrade – there are many more reasons to upgrade to DB2 10 and users will see significant business benefits. Here are the top 10 reasons why we feel you should start planning your upgrade.

1) Improved performance, reduced software license costs

2) Increase the number of concurrent users by a factor of ten

3) Reduce contention in database administration

4) More administrative capabilities while database is online

5) Improved security and auditing

6) Maintain “snapshots” of changing data – Temporal Data

7) Improved portability via enhanced SQL

 Enhanced pureXML performance and usability

9) Improved productivity for database/systems administrators and application programmers

10) Better online transaction processing performance – Hash Access

About the authors:

Both authors are very well known, so hardly need to be introduced, but nevertheless, here are details:
John Campbell, an IBM Distinguished Engineer working at the IBM Silicon Valley Lab. John is one of IBM’s foremost authorities for implementing high-end database, transaction-processing applications. Over the past 12 months he has been working closely with DB2 10 Beta customers.

Cristian Molaro is an independent consultant based in Belgium working in Europe for customers with some of the largest DB2 for z/OS installations. He has presented papers at several international conferences and local user groups in Europe and North America. He holds a Chemical Engineer degree and a Master in Management Sciences and is coauthor of 5 IBM Redbooks related to DB2 including the recent “DB2 10 for z/OS Performance Topics”. He was recognized by IBM as an Information Champion in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Cristian is part of the IDUG EMEA Conference Planning Committee, where he works as the Presentations Team Leader, and he is Chairman of the DB2 LUW User Group BeLux.

Launching our New DB2 10 Book – at IBM Information On Demand 2011 in Las Vegas and IDUG DB2 Tech Conference EMEA 2011

The Smarter, Faster Way to Upgrade

Last year we had a taste of our first DB2 10 book, this was launched at IBM Information On Demand in Las Vegas. The feedback from customers, partners and IBMers was tremendous. Based on feedback and such a high demand we have launched our second book and one of the authors of this book is:- Mr John Campbell (JC)- IBM Distinguished Engineer . Many of you in the “World of DB2 for z/OS” will know John and also know how valuable the knowledge and experience John has in his “head”. We all know we can do with several “JC’s” in “World of DB2 for z/OS! Although we have not been able to clone John yet … we are offering you the next best thing..

Here is a snapshot of our next book which we will be launching at IBM Information On Demand Conference in Las Vegas and at IDUG DB2 Tech Conference in Prague.

So why is this book so timely and why are we all excited ? Many customers are currently in a dilemma and planning their DB2 for z/OS migration strategy. We all know that IBM have announced end of service of DB2 for z/OS Version 8 (Announced August 2010, effective April 30, 2012)

DB2 for z/OS V8 will have been in the market 8 years since it was available in 2004, DB2 9 for z/OS was GA in 2007 and DB2 10 for z/OS was GA in 2010

So what version are you on now? Which migration path should you take ? Should you SKIP ?
The key question for skipping DB2 9 is, “How long can you wait for that function?” If you are on DB2 V8 today, how long after GA do you wait before moving to a new version? Is it one year? Two? Or three? In those cases, you’ll start moving to DB2 10 in 2011, 2012 or 2013, and probably get there about a year later.
The savings for skipping a version migration are just under 50%, since the education and needed changes are about the same.
Do you need the improvements in DB2 9 before that? CPU savings, especially in utilities. Disk savings via compression for indexes. Improved insert and update rates. Improved SQL and pureXML for developer productivity. Better availability.
For customers who are still running V7, the option to skip V8  10 is very attractive and makes the current path clear. Customers who have just migrated to V8 may like this alternative for the short term.

These are just some of the questions and answers on people’s minds and a taste of our new book. If you want a copy then we are offering complimentary copies at IBM events/conferences.

ONE CLEAR CHOICE FOR DB2 PROFESSIONALS. Sponsored by CA

I am currently attending SQLAdria DB2 User Seminar which is being held in Dubrovnik June 12-15, 2011. The User Event features technical sessions by Industry recognized DB2 experts, leading DB2 Gold Consultants and IBM Development. Participating in the SQLAdria event is an ideal opportunity to greatly improve your DB2 skills, expand your peer support community, network with DB2 industry experts and enhance your value to your organization. This is my first time at this seminar and wanted to share with my DB2 for z/OS followers – this is an excellent seminar to become a better connected, more knowledgeable DB2 professional!

We all know how difficult it is for DB2 professionals to attend DB2 training due to economic pressures. SQLAdria is a non-profit Independent DB2 User Group. Our intent is to offer world class DB2 education to at the lowest cost possible, thereby encouraging more people per year to attend quality DB2 training.
