IBM Announces DB2 10 – 19th October 2010

Today, IBM announced the latest release of DB2 for z/OS – DB2 10 .This release helps customers address the top issues in IT, reducing costs and improving operating efficiency. DB2 10 also delivers first of its kind capabilities, like Time Travel Query – first on DB2 and first on System z. Find out why customers have said this is the best release in a decade which will help them improve performance and deliver new insights that will provide a competitive edge. Nearly 100 customers and partners have been testing DB2 10 since February and have seen some fantastic results. We have over 40 quotes from customers and partners!.
With DB2 10, customers can skip a release, which means DB2 8 customers can go directly to DB2 10. Customers have the opportunity to not only take advantage of the new features which will save time, money and increase productivity but will also save on the cost of migration. If you are on DB2 8 for z/OS, remember End of Service is April 30th, 2012.
Here are just a few of the ways that DB2 10 for z/OS delivers industry leading innovation:
Extraordinary Scalability:
DB2 10 now enables SAP applications 6 times the number of users and activity on a single DB2 system. This is due to the virtual storage improvements that now deliver up to 10 times more scalability. This means fewer DB2 members are now required for the same workload – providing improved performance, reduced complexity, and cost savings.
Time Travel Query: DB2 10 provides the industry’s first integrated bitemporal capabilities built directly into the database. This allows for queries over any past, present or future period in time – with all the complexity handled by the database, not each application. This innovation is first available from IBM in DB2 on the System z platform. Just about every organization needs to keep track of the life of information in their systems. Now they can do so without the constant maintenance of custom code to keep everything in sync.
Direct Row Access: DB2 10 brings new Hash Access methodology that eliminates the need for applications to take multiple steps to get information from a single row. For many high performance applications, this new capability will provide up to a 30% improvement over traditional indexed data access.
Rapid application and warehouse deployment for business growth: DB2 10 delivers significant capabilities to consolidate applications and data warehouses with less cost, complexity and resources to manage.
Lowest Cost Platform Per User: DB2 10 delivers great value by reducing the processing time to complete required tasks. Since mainframe customer pay based on CPU usage, this translates to real savings for them. Since every customer’s IT environment is unique, so are the savings they could realize. Generally, customers could achieve a CPU savings of up to 5% – 10% for traditional workloads out-of-the-box, and up to 20% for non-traditional workloads. Beta customers have shown CPU reductions of up to 40% for certain workloads.

Unmatched security and compliance assurance: DB2 10 extends its legendary built-in security and trace features to provide end-to-end auditing capabilities which simplifies the extensive compliance requirements that our clients must adhere to. DB2 10 introduces a number of new system authorities designed to allow proper separation of administration and data access. These flexible administrative authorities provide greater access to information with improved control

Proven Day 1 Savings with DB2 Tools: Customers will be able to exploit DB2 10 performance savings out of the box, lower their CPU costs while reducing batch window, experience higher data availability through simplified recovery operations and more.

Enhanced business analytics and data visualization solutions with QMF 10: Query Management Facility (QMF) Version 10 provides new analytic and mathematical functions and OLAP support dramatically enhance QMF’s ability to deliver new function to business users — an important option for BI and analytics usage.

There is something for everyone in DB2 10 for z/OS. DB2 10 for z/OS provides the best reduction in CPU for transactions and batch for 22 years, since V2R1. We expect most customers to reduce CPU times between 5% and 10% initially, with opportunity for more. Applications which can take advantage of additional benefits, such as hash access, can have larger CPU and memory reductions. Scalability is the second major benefit, with the ability to run five to ten times as many threads in a single subsystem by moving 80% to 90% of the virtual storage above the bar. Schema evolution or data definition on demand enhancements improves availability. SQL, pureXML, and web services extend usability and application portability for this platform. Productivity improvements for application developers and for database administrators are very important as data grows in scale and complexity. Warehousing continues to evolve, with key trends matching System z and DB2 for z/OS strengths of performance, scalability, reliability, stability, availability, resilience, and security.

DB2 10 has a lot for everyone. Your organization needs to lower operating costs thru CPU cycle reductions while still building a strong foundation for SOA and XML initiatives. Database Administrators (DBAs) will find improved database performance, scalability, and availability. Memory management is dramatically reduced, so growth is much simpler. DBAs also get more flexible security to help with regulatory compliance. A wide range of enhancements improve ERP application and data warehouse functionality and performance. Large object (LOB) performance and flexibility are improved. Many DBA tasks are simplified.

Application developers will be most excited by the second release of pureXML, which improves the SQL and XML interface to access XML data stored in a native format. Application developers need powerful new SQL enhancements. Improved SQL and data definition compatibility with other DB2 platforms makes porting much easier. DB2 10 for z/OS Beta Launch – 9th February 2010

DB2 10 for z/OS Beta Announcement 9th February 2010
Cut cost and improve performance

The undisputed leader in total system availability, scalability, security and reliability.

DB2 for z/OS Announcement Letter

In today’s business and economic environment, the challenge for IT is clear: improve operational efficiencies, reduce costs, and adapt quickly to support business growth — all without sacrificing the resiliency required for today’s demanding business requirements. DB2 for z/OS is the undisputed leader in total system availability, scalability, security, and reliability at the lowest cost per transaction. DB2 10 builds on the formidable capabilities of DB2 9 for z/OS and continues to set the standard, delivering key innovations and resource savings, including:

1. Out-of-the-box Savings by improving operational efficiencies
IBM continues to invest in new features to support your efforts to make your business more efficient, and DB2 10 delivers great value in this area. Compared to previous DB2 versions, some customers can achieve a 5% to 10% out-of-the-box CPU savings for traditional workloads and up to 20% out-of-the-box CPU savings for non-traditional workloads. Productivity improvements in DB2 10 for database and system administrators can drive additional operational efficiencies and cost savings. Synergy with other IBM System z platform components reduces CPU use by leveraging the latest processor improvements, larger amounts of memory, solid-state disk and z/OS enhancements.

2. Unsurpassed DB2 for z/OS and System z Resiliency for business critical information
Business resiliency is a key component of the value proposition of DB2 for z/OS and the System z platform, supporting your efforts to keep your business running even when things go wrong or you need to make changes. DB2 10 innovations drive new value in resiliency through scalability improvements and fewer outages – planned or unplanned. Scalability delivers the ability to handle up to 20,000 concurrent active users on a single DB2 subsystem, many more than in previous versions. Schema evolution or data definition on demand as well as query performance manageability enhancements support improved availability.
Rapid Application and Warehouse Deployment for business growth
Staying competitive in today’s global economy is tougher than ever, requiring agility, adaptability and responsiveness. SQL and pureXML enhancements in DB2 10 help extend usability, improve performance and ease application portability to DB2 for z/OS, supporting your efforts to create a sustainable competitive advantage.

3. Enhanced query and reporting facilities
Query Management Facility (QMF) 10 allows you to do more with your existing QMF investment than ever before. Built-in data visualizations and graphical page-based reports extend QMF usage from the traditional technical user to a broader community of business end users. QMF’s new metadata layer simplifies the underlying data model, empowering non-technical users with self-service reporting and extends access to DB2 for z/OS across the enterprise, helping to further increase the return on your investment.
