Abstract DB2 10 for Z/OS
A high-level overview of major new features

Even in the most favorable economic climate, businesses need to control costs and increase efficiency in order to improve their bottom line. In today’s more challenging business environment this has become a key factor for the survival and success of enterprises of all sizes.

DB2 10 delivers significant “out of the box” benefits that many customers will be able to exploit with little or no additional effort. These include the most aggressive performance and CPU improvements of any DB2 release in the last 20 years, scalability enhancements to support ever-increasing workloads and productivity improvements to allow DB2 developers and support staff to do respond more rapidly to the demands of the business.

Collectively, these features deliver real and quantifiable business benefit, and many customers will be considering upgrading to DB2 10 much more quickly than they may have done for previous releases.

IBM Announces DB2 10 – 19th October 2010

Today, IBM announced the latest release of DB2 for z/OS – DB2 10 .This release helps customers address the top issues in IT, reducing costs and improving operating efficiency. DB2 10 also delivers first of its kind capabilities, like Time Travel Query – first on DB2 and first on System z. Find out why customers have said this is the best release in a decade which will help them improve performance and deliver new insights that will provide a competitive edge. Nearly 100 customers and partners have been testing DB2 10 since February and have seen some fantastic results. We have over 40 quotes from customers and partners!.
With DB2 10, customers can skip a release, which means DB2 8 customers can go directly to DB2 10. Customers have the opportunity to not only take advantage of the new features which will save time, money and increase productivity but will also save on the cost of migration. If you are on DB2 8 for z/OS, remember End of Service is April 30th, 2012.
Here are just a few of the ways that DB2 10 for z/OS delivers industry leading innovation:
Extraordinary Scalability:
DB2 10 now enables SAP applications 6 times the number of users and activity on a single DB2 system. This is due to the virtual storage improvements that now deliver up to 10 times more scalability. This means fewer DB2 members are now required for the same workload – providing improved performance, reduced complexity, and cost savings.
Time Travel Query: DB2 10 provides the industry’s first integrated bitemporal capabilities built directly into the database. This allows for queries over any past, present or future period in time – with all the complexity handled by the database, not each application. This innovation is first available from IBM in DB2 on the System z platform. Just about every organization needs to keep track of the life of information in their systems. Now they can do so without the constant maintenance of custom code to keep everything in sync.
Direct Row Access: DB2 10 brings new Hash Access methodology that eliminates the need for applications to take multiple steps to get information from a single row. For many high performance applications, this new capability will provide up to a 30% improvement over traditional indexed data access.
Rapid application and warehouse deployment for business growth: DB2 10 delivers significant capabilities to consolidate applications and data warehouses with less cost, complexity and resources to manage.
Lowest Cost Platform Per User: DB2 10 delivers great value by reducing the processing time to complete required tasks. Since mainframe customer pay based on CPU usage, this translates to real savings for them. Since every customer’s IT environment is unique, so are the savings they could realize. Generally, customers could achieve a CPU savings of up to 5% – 10% for traditional workloads out-of-the-box, and up to 20% for non-traditional workloads. Beta customers have shown CPU reductions of up to 40% for certain workloads.

Unmatched security and compliance assurance: DB2 10 extends its legendary built-in security and trace features to provide end-to-end auditing capabilities which simplifies the extensive compliance requirements that our clients must adhere to. DB2 10 introduces a number of new system authorities designed to allow proper separation of administration and data access. These flexible administrative authorities provide greater access to information with improved control

Proven Day 1 Savings with DB2 Tools: Customers will be able to exploit DB2 10 performance savings out of the box, lower their CPU costs while reducing batch window, experience higher data availability through simplified recovery operations and more.

Enhanced business analytics and data visualization solutions with QMF 10: Query Management Facility (QMF) Version 10 provides new analytic and mathematical functions and OLAP support dramatically enhance QMF’s ability to deliver new function to business users — an important option for BI and analytics usage.
