DB2 9 for z/OS End of Service announcement

We recently announced that DB2 9   for z/OS will go out of service on June 27, 2014.     This gives you the necessary early planning information and ample time to build and execute your DB2 migration  plans.
An additional consideration is the end-of-service for DB2 V8 for z/OS effective on April 12, 2012.  Are you planning your migration plans to either DB2 9 or DB2 10 ?

FAQ
Q: Why did IBM announce EOS before announcing GA of DB2 Sequioa?
A: Customers have told us that it is critical that they know what is coming so they can create reasonable plans.   This is an attempt to provide that early notice and give customers plenty of time to plan for and successfully execute their specific migration plans.

Q:  There was more time between Withdraw from Marketing (WfM) and End of Service(EOS) for DB2 V8.  Have you changed the life cycle policy?
A:  The time window between WfM and EOS has varied for many reasons.  This window is not the core measure we use to determine EOS dates.   Our life cycle policy states that we will keep a version under normal support for at least 5 years from GA, followed by at least 3 years of extended service.    With this announcement,   DB2 9 will be in regular service for over 7 years.

Q: Where can I find the most up to date life cycle information for DB2 for z/OS?
A: You can see the latest life cycle information on the Support Lifecycle webpage at http://www.ibm.com/software/support/lifecycle/index_a_z.html

Q: What information is available to help customers justify their migrations?
A: Julian Stuhler created a wonderful article around DB2 10 justification  .
There is also a Business Value Assessment Tool available that can be used by IBMers to help customers see the potential value DB2 10 may bring to their specific environment

On Oct. 19, 2010, IBM announced DB2® 10. This latest release of DB2 delivers the most aggressive package of CPU savings and performance improvements from IBM in more than 20 years, and for the first time since 2001, IBM has offered skip release. With the increased cost of support software licenses, the launch of DB2 10 and the announcement of DB2 V8 end-of-service, many DB2 users are considering migration and need direction in planning the right migration strategy for their business. But how do you approach a migration strategy? When is the best time to start? Is skipping a release a good strategy? What are the costs versus benefits for any scenario?

Join us for this complimentary webcast as we address the most critical business issues to consider such a migration, so you can develop a strategy and plan for your own migration. We will describe the options available and some of the potential risks versus benefits. Overall, this webcast will help you choose the best path for your situation, and get ready to migrate to the new version. Whether you are ready to migrate now or you are still years away, planning should start now so that you can use your time more effectively and minimize the ultimate cost of upgrading.

All webcast attendees will receive a free copy of “Executive Report of Business Value of DB2 10 – Smarter Database for a Smarter Planet” by Julian Stuhler, an Internationally recognized DB2 consultant and analyst.

In this webcast, we’ll discuss:

* Defining migration plan details for each component in your environment — servers, clients, applications and routines
* Incorporating steps from previous migration plans, including internal procedures to request access, software installation or other system services
* Understanding product restrictions and recommendations in order to plan your migration strategy

The DB2 for z/OS Exchange

The DB2 for z/OS Exchange has moved to IBM My developerWorks.

In case you aren’t familiar with the Exchange or need a reminder of what this site is all about… it’s a community website where you can share sample code with your colleagues. So far, the community has posted examples of recursive common table expressions, converting EBCDIC columns to Unicode, converting CLOB columns to XML, native SQL procedures, INSTEAD OF triggers for partitioning tables, and more. Plus, IBM has posted the ever popular MEMU2 and MEMUSAGE REXX execs.

Here’s what DB2 for z/OS customers are saying about the examples on this site:
“This code has been a life saver!”
“This is the code that I’ve been looking for years. It is an outstanding job”
“Beautiful! I love it! Thanks!”
“This is just what I needed!”
“This is so cool!”

Any of these examples pique your interest? Or are you looking for something else? Perhaps a REXX call of DB2? A stored procedure that returns a result set? Or maybe a before and after example of an external procedure that has been converted to a native SQL procedure? Or maybe an example COBOL program that has been modified to handle Unicode data?

Whether you have one of these examples to submit, want to post a request for one of these examples, or just want to browse what’s already there, come visit this website. And remember to update any old bookmarks.

New DB2 Application Programming Certificate as part of our z Series education at an introductory price

I want to make the DB2 for z/OS community aware of our up coming DB2 Application Programming offering from the Institute for Data Center Professionals at Marist College.
We are offering a new DB2 Application Programming Certificate as part of our z Series education at an introductory price. The Certificate consists of three classes, all delivered on line (so there is no travel involved), for an introductory price of $2,000 (for all three classes). These classes are based on the DB2 materials developed by Dr. Gene Fuh at IBM and used at San Jose State College. We have enhanced the original materials with additional labs which the students complete on our z10 server. For additional information, please visit our web site or feel free to send any questions directly to me (angelo.corridori@marist.edu). Thanks!
